Kelso Town Square

Kelso

Kelso was described by Sir Walter Scott as ‘The most beautiful, if not the most romantic town in Scotland’. It has a glorious setting, nestling in the Cheviots, with the River Tweed sweeping round the backs of pretty Georgian cottages and the unusual octagonal parish church. The 18th century cobbled square and handsome townhouses give Kelso the elegant air of a French market town.

There are reminders of the town’s magnificent medieval past in the ruins of its Romanesque Abbey, built for David I in 1128. It was one of the biggest abbeys in the area before it was razed to the ground in 1545 during Scotland’s rough wooing by Henry VIII.

Floors Castle is the largest inhabited castle in Scotland and you can wander through spectacular staterooms filled with priceless European paintings, tapestries and furnishings.

Kelso is a wonderful market town brimming with wonderful shops, unique and individual. It is a great shopping experience with friendly staff always ready to assist offering amazing goods, from gifts, fishing tackle, massage and beauty shops, fruit shops and butchers and deli and a fish shop to clothes shops including wedding dress shops and country clothing to dressmakers. There is everything you could wish for and more.
Restaurants and cafes aplenty.

I have an extensive list in my folder in the cottages to fill you with inspiration. Shopping local is appreciated and simply the best.

The Knowes car park is large and just off Kelso square, it is free and you can stay all day!

Other things to look out for are craft shops, jewellers and bead making, art classes, bakers, and take aways.
